Obesity is a major heath issue and is a major risk for diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and some types of cancer. Safe and effective treatment options for obesity are limited. Extracts from the immature fruit of Citrus aurantium (Bitter Orange) are often used as a weight loss supplement, but are reported to produce adverse cardiovascular effects. Root extracts of Rhodiola rosea (Golden Root) have notable anti-stress properties. Previous pilot studies from our laboratory has indicated that oral adminstration of Citrus aurantium (6% synephrine) and Rhodiola rosea (3% rosavins, 1% salidroside) together improve diet-induced obesity alterations in adult male Sprague Dawley rats(Verpeut et al., 2013, Nutrition Research). This projects would extend those findings by examing the metabolic, endocrine, and body homeostasis mechanisms involvedwith the treatments of C. aurantium and R. rosea in diet-induced obese mice. The project would use non-invasive methods to accurately determine the length of treatment to reduce body fat and influences on metabolic rates. In addition, we will examine how botanical treatments influence the neuroendocrine markers of obesity and diabetes. Based on our previous studies it was determined that the combined botanical treatments increased hypothalamic norepinephrine. The second part of this project would examine how critical hypothalamic norepinephrine is to the anti-obesity effects of C. aurantium and R. rosea . The findings would contribute to novel therapeutic options for the treatment of obesity and associated metabolic disorders.
