Conference Grant To Attend The 5Th International Controlled Environment Conference

This conference grant proposal is for providing travel awards to North American attendees to the 5th International Controlled Environment Conference (ICEC) held in Canberra, Australia on September 18-23, 2016. The conference is co-organized by the NCERA-101 Committee on Controlled Environment Technology and Use, the UK Controlled Environment Users Group (UK-CEUG) and the Australasian Controlled Environment Working Group (ACEWG) in collaboration with the Australian Plant Phenomics Facility (APPF). These three controlled environment groups have been collaborating for over 15 years and share the same vision and mission of supporting users of and technology development for controlled environment plant growth facilities. Our collaborative efforts resulted in the publication of three international guidelines that address measuring and reporting environmental parameters for experiments conducted in controlled environments (i.e., growth chambers, tissue culture facilities, and greenhouses). This 5th ICEC conference will provide a multidisciplinary discussion platform for scientists, facility supervisors, engineers and students working with controlled environment technologies. The conference focuses on the growing area of plant phenomics and the highly-automated controlled environment facilities used for phenomics research. Our goal with this conference grant is to bring key expertise in controlled environment technology and use from North America to the conference in order to identify perceived or hidden obstacles to the effective design and operation of plant phenomics facilities, and to determine the need for a white paper that describes a roadmap for controlled environment technologies and operating guidelines needed for the next generation of controlled environment facilities, including phenomics facilities.
