Plant Breeding must react now to the effects that climate change may cause to our plant species. Diseases, drought and abiotic stresses may become more problematic in the future. It takes several years to develop new cultivars so it is important to work on this problem now. Turfgrasses are important for the healthy active wellbeing of human kind,while perennial grasses developed for biofuel will lead to increasing energy security. Using both classical and molecular breeding techniques, we hope to improve turfgrasses and perennial grasses for biofuel for biotic and abiotic stresses and harsh environmental conditions. This will result in turgrasses that can be utilized with the same high quality but with less chemicals and less use of natural resources and biofuel grasses that can grow and be profitable on marginal land not suitable for food crops. This will result in environmental benefits by reducing pesticide use, saving water and natural resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by utilizing perennial grasses for biofuels.
