Description

The nutritional status of the mother is a key factor for the development and growth of the fetus. Ourresearch seeks to understand the role played by b-carotene, the best-characterized vitamin A precursor, in maternal-fetal nutrition, not only as a precursor of vitamin A, but also as a regulator of vitamin A and lipid metabolism in the developing tissues. These studies will have a significant impact on human health as they aim at unraveling the cross-talk between micro- and macro-nutrient metabolism in maternal and developing tissues, as well as the potential modulating effects of maternal diet and disease states in a crucial stage of the lifecycle, i.e. embryonic development.
