Abstract

At Antee 2008, a simple, spiral fluted extensional mixer (SFEM) was introduced for the single screw extruder (SSE) [1]. The essence of the SFEM was arranged into the compounding element of a micro-batch mixer. The objective of this work was to compare the mixedness of the SFEM SSE to the batch mixer using several material systems at the macro and microscopic level. The micro batch mixer yielded similar mixedness of particle-polymer and polymer-polymer systems, as when processed using the SSE with SFEM elements even at the 2 micron scale.
