Abstract

A rapid quantitative and small scale method based on direct injection pyrolysis gas chromatography is described for determining the homolog composition of quaternary ammonium halide surfactants. A surfactant is treated with Ag2O in MeOH or EtOH and the supernatant is injected into a GLC inlet where pyrolysis gives Hofmann elimination and dealkylation products. The results provide a direct measure of the homolog composition of the surfactant even though the product distribution depends upon the origin of the Ag20. The results also clarify apparent discrepancies in earlier surfactant homolog analyses by direct injection, pyrolytic GLC.
