A soluble model of a variational calculation with correlations

Abstract

The monopole-monopole interaction λr2(1)r2(2) is used both to get a Hartree potential and to obtain 1p-1h and 2p-2h correlations. The resulting variational problem is not difficult to solve. It is shown that although the optimum value of the oscillator parameter h{stroke}ω changes in such a way as to increase the mean square radius, the 1p-1h correlations resist this change to a large extent. The energy of the breathing mode is obtained both microscopically and macroscopically.
