Abstract

This chapter considers conceptualizations of extremism; discuss a variety of processes that can lead to extreme beliefs and extremist actions; explains how extreme beliefs and behaviors are often embedded within narratives that are grounded in strong motives and amplified by particular intense emotions (using narratives employed by Donald Trump as an example); and concludes by offering suggestions for countering extremist views.
