Abstract
This essay investigates the relationship between historical or quasi-historical figures and the literary characters they eventually become. It uses medieval understandings of character, temporality and textual afterlives as a way of approaching various transformations in Hilary Mantel's early novel, Fludd, and Colm Tóibín's more recent The Testament of Mary.
