Abstract

Chinese hamster V79 cells were maintained at temperatures between 40.5 and 46.0°C in normal culture medium or medium containing 87% D2O. Between 40.5 and 42.0° C, thermal sensitization was observed in D2O medium for heating intervals greater than 4 to 6 hr, and thermal tolerance was eliminated. Heating between 43.0 and 46.0°C in D2O medium resulted in thermal protection. Arrhenius curves showed a break at about 43.0°C for cells heated in normal medium, but not for cells heated in D2O medium.
