An overview and future trends of US biopesticide regulations

Registration of microorganisms, biochemicals and plant incorporated protectants is authorized by the Biopesticides and Pollution Prevention Division of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. There is a tiered system of data requirements with the first tier based on risk assessment utilizing a maximum hazard dose approach. The main categories of data include product chemistry, residues, human health and environmental effects. Human health and environmental data requirements are frequently fulfilled by providing a scientific rationale employing existing knowledge with which to develop a risk assessment. Greater emphasis is being placed on various types of drift and potential interaction with endangered species. Newer biotechnological approaches will require greater cooperation among federal agencies involved in release, monitoring and registration of biopesticides.
