Analysis of oxygen transport to hepatocytes in a flat-plate microchannel bioreactor

Abstract

Oxygen transfer to cultured hepatocytes in microchannel parallel-plate bioreactors was investigated with and without an internal membrane oxygenator. Simulations indicated that the cells are hypoxic in the bioreactor without an internal membrane oxygenator under the condition of low Peclet number and fixed Damkohler number. Bioreactor provided greater control of oxygen gradients using two additional variables membrane Sherwood number and gas phase oxygen partial pressure. Oxygen concentrations within the bioreactors were found to be in good agreement with model predictions.
