Abstract

Backcross-1 progenies derived from Vaccinium ashel (2n=6x=72)-V. australe (2n=4x=48) pentaploid hybrids backcrossed to V. australe were investigated cytologically. Chromosomal constitutions of the BC1 seedlings ranged from 2n=48 (4x level) to 2n=60 (5x level), with 93.2 percent of the seedlings being aneuploids, 83.8 percent multiple aneuploids, and 6.8 percent tetraploids. Chromosomal constitution frequency distributions from 5x X 4x and 4x X 5x crosses were not significantly different. Overall, there was a 22.5 percent loss of the extra genome. Meiotic chromosome elimination was studied in two BC1 aneuploids. Contrary to earlier reports, the extra chromosomes when as univalents at metaphase I and as lagging chromatids at anaphase I were not necessarily excluded from telophase II nuclei.
