Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases are the number 1 cause of death globally. Lifestyle interventions that promote a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and weight loss have been shown to modify the risk of disease progression. A review of the evidence suggests that adherence to a Mediterranean diet pattern may improve metabolic parameters and decrease the risk of cardiovascular events and mortality. The case report of a patient with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome is presented to highlight the important role of evidence-based nutrition interventions as a cost-effective component of secondary prevention and primary reduction of cardiovascular disease risk factors.
