Abstract

Blunt chest trauma includes a broad spectrum of cardiac and aortic injuries. While injury severity ranges from asymptomatic to rapidly fatal, prompt identification is paramount and a high index of suspicion must be present upon initial evaluation. When identified, emergent operative or intensive care interventions may be lifesaving. This chapter describes the spectrum of injury as well as appropriate diagnostic algorithms and treatment strategies for this subset of injury.
