A finite element analysis of bone plate designs was performed to study the effect of the following causes on the failure of the bone plate - screw holes, layer properties, loading modes, manufacturing defects. This was done using a computer aided design (CAD) tool developed for general design/analysis problems. The automated nature of the design procedure and visual presentation of results assists the designer in making design modifications to prevent failure of bone plate when use. The work presented here is a part of the attempt to study complete bone-boneplate systems under predicted loads.
