Abstract

Climate change is driving large-scale changes in both marine ecosystems and human behavior, creating challenges and opportunities for marine conservation and fisheries management. Here, we lay out key features of climate, ecosystem, and human dynamics; how these dynamics interact; and emerging adaptation, conservation, and management approaches in the Anthropocene ocean. We argue that ocean conservation, management, and climate adaptation will be most effective when approached through the lens of coupled social-ecological systems.
