Abstract

The following chapter is presented as an interview between the editors of this book and Shirley Mark, former program manager at the Schott Foundation. As noted in the introduction to the book, Schott’s work is singled out here because in their early initiative Gender Healthy/Respectful Schools, they brought grantees together on a regular basis to share their ideas and experiences and pose questions. Although Mark is no longer at the Schott Foundation, the Foundation continues to keep gender as a major category of funding, including a unique and special initiative (described in section one) on Saving Black Boys.
