Abstract
This article provides an introduction to the field of cultural studies through an exploration of three ways in which cultural studies has challenged dominant views of education: (1) approaches to institutions, (2) conceptions of youth, and (3) relationships to social and political change. For each of these, we discuss both what cultural studies has contributed to this dimension, and how these contributions exist in tension with how education has traditionally framed the issue. We argue that rather than obstacles, these tensions present opportunities for the development and growth of understandings of the relationship between culture and education.
