Abstract
Plants are inhabited by communities of nonpathogenic microbes. This microbiome consists of both bacterial and fungal components and may exist on plant surfaces and interiors. However, we do not fully understand how this microbiome functions in plants. In this chapter, we review the development of the plant microbiome and microbiome functions relative to plant development, growth, nutrition, and defense from stress and diseases.
