Abstract

Analytical and physical models are used to quantify forces associated with arterial deformation in tonometry. Results indicate that these forces are manifested as a contact stress that is distributed, over the flattened portion of the arterial wall. The measured contact stress distribution in latex tubes agrees with that predicted, but measured contact stress in canine femoral artery is found to be considerably lower than predicted. The authors conclude that arterial applanation forces become negligibly small in tonometry.
