Abstract

Rats receiving rostral brainstem stimulation of 6 µa performed significantly better on a VR2 schedule and on a VR5 schedule than operated controls. Stimulation of 18 µa resulted in significantly impaired VR5 performance. Experimental control made explanation in terms of “rewarding” or “punishing” effects of stimulation unlikely. The findings provide neurophysiological evidence for a curvilinear relationship between performance and arousal.
