title = "Difficulties for the evolution of pure states into mixed states",
abstract = "Motivated by Hawking's proposal that the quantum-mechanical density matrix ρ{variant} obeys an equation more general than the Schr{\"o}dinger equation, we study the general properties of evolution equations for ρ{variant}. We argue that any more general equation for ρ{variant} violates either locality or energy-momentum conservation.",
