Abstract
Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a common binder in ceramic bodies. It is the binder in a system that gives extra strength and helps a green body keep its form before sintering. The uniformity of binder distributed within a green body can be influenced by the shear history of the initial batch. Using a polarized-light microscope and certain imaging software, the birefringence under shear, distribution, and homogeneity of a poly(vinyl alcohol) binder within an aqueous alumina body can be determined.
