Abstract
We have investigated the appearance of ferromagnetism in a mixture of nonferromagnets (Formula presented) and (Formula presented), without heterovalent ion substitution in La sites. (Formula presented)(Formula presented)(Formula presented) and (Formula presented)(Formula presented)(Formula presented)(Formula presented)(Formula presented) are studied by using x-ray-absorption and resonant photoemission spectroscopies. The results show that the dopant Co in (Formula presented)(Formula presented)(Formula presented) becomes divalent rather than expected trivalent and induces (Formula presented)-(Formula presented) mixed valence states. Therefore, at variance with the earlier proposal of a structure-induced (Formula presented)-(Formula presented) ferromagnetic coupling, the ferromagnetic state in (Formula presented)(Formula presented)(Formula presented) is consistent with the (Formula presented)-(Formula presented) double-exchange mechanism.
