Effect of lysolecithin on protein and glycoprotein components of the gastric mucous barrier

Abstract

The effect of lysolecithin on the protein and glycoprotein component of the Gosh-Lai rat stomach mucous barrier was investigated. Lysolecithin produced gradual, concentration-dependent enrichment of the instillates with protein and protein-bound carbohydrate. This enrichment took place in two phases in one of which lysolecithin (up to 0.16 mg/ml) does not break the gastric mucous barrier, and the other (above 0.4 mg/ml) in which lysolecithin breaks the gastric mucous barrier. The results suggests that lysolecithin at low concentrations exerts topical action on the surface mucus layer and at high concentrations affects the preformed intracellular mucus.
