Energy ratios of low-lying 2+, 4+ and 6+ states are examined for several regions of the periodic table. A linear function of R ( 4 2) characterizes R( 6 4) for nearly all collective nuclei with A > 60. Deviations from this smooth systematic behavior provide a signature of coexisting collective and non-collective configurations in theyrast excitations.
