Abstract

Concerns about the costs of viral meningitis (VM) are growing, and accurate estimates of the economic impact of VM are becoming increasingly relevant. We assessed the economic impact of VM using a decision analytic framework. Based on a conservatively estimated 300,000 annual cases in the United States, the economic impact in direct costs to payers exceeds $1.5 billion per year. The indirect annual costs include approximately 2 million activity-restricted days.
