Abstract

A large number of observations on the effects of ethylene on vegetative growth have been made since the discovery of the hormonal effects of this gas. 1 The role of ethylene in regulating such physiological processes as dormancy, germination, root and leaf development, and abscission are discussed elsewhere in this book. This chapter will concentrate on the effects of ethylene on the vegetative growth of dry land and semiaquatic plants with the emphasis on the cellular mechanisms of ethylene action. The recent work dedicated to understanding ethylene action at the molecular level and the future approaches to ethylene research will also be discussed.
