Fiber optics for 3 and 10 micron medical lasers

Abstract

Newly developed glass waveguides with losses as low as 0.1 dB/m are successfully being used to deliver up to 80 W of CO2 of Er:YAG laser power for a variety of surgical applications. The waveguide was fabricated by taking polymer-coated, thin-wall silica glass tubing and depositing on the inside a metallic layer followed by a thin dielectric coating to enhance the reflectivity of the metal film. The structure of the waveguide is presented.
