Abstract

In the recent past several investigators have utilized finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate the load-deformation characteristics of the lumbar intervertebral joint [1,2,3,4,5,6]. The underlying goal has been to understand a role of mechanical factors associated with the injury and disease in the lumbar intervertebral joint. This study was performed with the intention of developing a defect or an injury model. A fiber reinforced composite finite element model of a lumbar disc L3-4 has been developed. This paper discusses sensitivities of one of the mechanical factors, namely material properties on the elongation and the stress behavior within the disc under uniaxial compressive load.
