Abstract

Sandwich panel were constructed using a balsa wood core with fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) facings. A thin layer of a fire-resistant paste composed of Geopolymer matrix and lightweight glass powder was placed on the surface of the facings. The panels were tested to measure the heat release and smoke generating properties of the sandwich composite. The various test results show that a strong relationship existed between the thickness of the fire paste and the sandwich plate density. It was also stated that for any given thickness of fire coating, the resulting density of the sandwich structure could be estimated accurately.
