Abstract

In a group of 230 patients presenting with bacillary tuberculosis reported in 1998 in Prague (111 cases) and in the South-Moravian region (119 cases) seven, i.e. cca 3 %, excreted the genotype W-Beijing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The gene characteristics of the strains were established on the basis of a) the presence of 17-22 copies of the insertive sequence IS6110 in RFLP fingerprinting; and, b) the demonstration, in spoligotyping, of nine spacersć amplified in a set of reference oligonucleotides in positions 35-43. Except for one Czech, a 47-year-old woman, a resident of Prague (however, originally came from the vicinity of Moscow, Russia), all the others were foreigners aged 29-35 years from Mongolia (5 patients) and from Peru (1 patient). The M. tuberculosis strain of one patient was resistant to isoniazid, the strains of all the other patients were sensitive to isoniazid, rifampicin, streptomycin, ethambutol and pyrazinamide. The incidence of sporadic eliminators of the genotype W-Beijing in the Czech Republic additionally confirms its gradual pandemic spreading from distant geographical regions, supported by the migration of its hosts.
