The crystal structure and hydrogen-bonding pattern of the monohydrate of gibberic acid was reported. The synthesis of the compound proceeded through a degradation mechanism involving aromatization, hydrolysis, decarboxylation and dehrydration. The geometry of hydrogen bonding was established with respect to the deviation of carbonyl groups from axial and planar symmetry.
