The parameters and laboratory techniques of preparing and measuring wet batch were examined. The basic considerations center around the sodium carbonate-water phase diagram, where the soda ash monohydrate phase field was found to contain the most desirable conditions for batch wetting. In addition to equilibrium reactions the kinetics of soda ash hydration was noted as an important parameter. Studies of wet batch microstructure show an alkali solution-recrystallization process, which bonds the smaller batch particles into small granules and distributes alkali material over the surfaces of all the materials.
