Abstract
Efficacy of couterpulsation depends on several factors. These may be the size and position of the balloon, the geometric and elastic properties of the aorta, the severity of heart failure, and arterial pressure. However, timing has also been shown to be a critical variable. Previous model studies have shown that proper timing of balloon inflation and deflation affects pumping efficacy. The authors attempt to experimentally verify these and to investigate an optimal pumping scheme that can be determined from the inflation period and its relative position in the cardiac cycle.
