Innovative bridge deck project will assess corrosion damage and make repairs quickly and accurately

Abstract

A university-industry joint venture, led by the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is developing an integrated nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and repair system called Automated Nondestructive Evaluation and Rehabilitation System (ANDERS), for bridge decks that merges imaging and NDE techniques for damage detection with innovative and economical approaches to restoring bridge deck deterioration. ANDERS will provide much more detailed and comprehensive detection of early onset deterioration and realize both time and cost savings. To assess deck conditions, ANDERS will use the Multi-Modal Nondestructive Evaluation (MM-NDE) System that will detect and characterize localized deterioration and the Global Structural Assessment (GSA) System that will determine any significant effects of deterioration on the bridge structure as a whole and shed light on how local deterioration will affect the structure's overall performance.
