Abstract

This introductory chapter provides an overview of the book's main themes. This book is a collection of the so-called joint ventures of cognitive science and philosophy. The first part focuses on the understanding of mental states and the theory of mind; the second part talks about empathy, which highlights the simulation theory, and embodied cognition; and the third part discusses the interrelationship between cognitive science and philosophy, particularly metaphysics. The book's title, Joint Ventures, hints at its integrative nature; it also points out to the simulation theory which explains that mindreading in itself is a matter of joint venture. Overall, the book strives to make a compromise between the need for scientific evidence and philosophical theories.
