Abstract

The Cl**1**6** plus n equals 2 Lamb shift has been measured by resonant laser quenching of a fast ( nu /c approx. 0. 1) metastable beam. The result for the 2S//1/////2 - 2P//1/////2 splitting is 31. 19(22)THz in agreement with the calculation of Mohr and with the series expansion in powers of (Z alpha ).
