Abstract

A description is given of the physical basis and present theoretical predictions and experimental verification in resonance transitions of atomic sodium and barium. It is shown that laser saturation spectroscopy with optical pumping leads to several novel effects. Saturation signals of anomalous sign and amplitude dependent on laser polarization, reduced saturation thresholds, and narrow spectral features have been described and experimentally demonstrated. These effects, which must be considered in the analysis of any saturation measurement where optical pumping is possible, provide a new means for studying M-changing collisions, transit time effects and other properties of laser optical pumping.
