Abstract

The CORE (Chemistry Online Retrieval Experiment) project is an electronic library of primary journal articles in chemistry, containing twenty primary journals published by the American Chemical Society in the last five years. CORE includes both a scanned image and a marked-up ASCII version for each page of the publisher's database. The results of preliminary user studies are reported in this article, which shed light on the advantages of electronic publishing and the remaining impediments to its adoption.
