Abstract
Mandatory continuing education for social work and other professions is, in part, a response to concern about professional competence. The authors analyze the inadequacy of this approach in assuring continuing competence and suggest alternatives. Although programs under development are in their infancy, they show a trend away from paper-and-pencil tests toward real-life practice simulations.
