A numerical mixing zone model was developed utilizing an implicit finite difference method with a weighted numerical scheme. The model was based on the two-dimensional advection-dispersion equation formulated with the stream tube concept. To reduce the field data requirements, cross-sectional profiles of the stream geometry and velocity distribution were simulated using the typical flow condition of a shallow river and the resistance equation. The applicability of the model was tested through simulations of mixing zones resulting from municipal wastewater effluent discharges. Conductivity was used as a conservative tracer.
