Abstract

This chapter begins by summarizing our exploration of various metadata standards for provenance, PROV, ProvONE and PREMIS, including the use of a real-world case. Yet there remain unanswered questions and unsolved problems regarding provenance documentation. This chapter discusses the lingering issues of the persuasiveness of provenance; the need for appraisal for provenance; circularity of definitions which arise in one metadata standard but are accommodated in another; as well as the complicated temporal nature of provenance which manifests in prospective, retrospective, and subjunctive provenance.
