Abstract

The mammalian brain continues to generate new cells throughout adulthood. Many of these cells undergo programmed cell death about 1-2 weeks after they are generated. Among the most active neurogenic regions of the adult brain is within the hippocampal formation, a brain region that is important for learning and memory. Certain types of learning can rescue these new neurons from death.
