On balanced signed graphs and consistent marked graphs

Abstract

Data in the social sciences can often be modeled using signed graphs, graphs where every edge has a sign + or -, or marked graphs, graphs where every vertex has a sign + or -. We study balanced signed graphs, those where every cycle has an even number of - edges, and consistent marked graphs, those where every cycle has an even number of - vertices. We survey motivation for and applications of these concepts and characterizations of balance and consistency.
