Optimizing phase sequence and signalization settings for a two-phase junction using genetic algorithm

Signalization management is a crucial operation that determines the performance of the vehicular flow within congested road networks. Considerable research has been conducted on the problem of optimizing traffic signal timings and cycle times under over-saturated conditions, however, other factors such as the junction's phase sequence have been rarely mentioned in the literature. Phase sequence is the factor that determines the signalization order allocated to a number of control points at a defined junction. This paper develops a model in which both; the traffic signal settings (Signal Timings and Cycle Time) and the phase sequence are optimized using Genetic Algorithm for a two-phase intersection. The optimization results outperform those of previous research work that neglected the effect of phase sequence, and hence, showing the importance of taking the phase sequence into consideration.
