Outcomes research involves the use of new methods and concepts to analyze the effects of clinical processes and interventions. An important issue is the application of the broad concepts and global methods of outcomes research to clinical practice and local circumstances. This article briefly reviews the nature of outcomes research and discusses some representative outcomes research in the field of nutrition support. The remainder of the article offers examples and suggestions to facilitate the application of outcomes research concepts to a nutrition practice setting with the goal of improving the quality and efficiency of patient care.
