Abstract

To the Editor: It might be of interest to physicians who read the two reports of pharmacologic closure of patent ductus arteriosus in neonates with indomethacin¹^,² to note our experience with the use of this agent in a 16-year-old girl. Since the persistent ductus contains some smooth-muscle fibers,³ may close spontaneously at any age⁴ and may retain the ability to constrict at least until the age of 10 months,⁵ we decided to try indomethacin on a 16-year-old girl with a small patent ductus arteriosus and minimal left-to-right shunt (ratio of pulmonary to systemic blood flow, 1.2:1).
