Abstract

To the Editor: It might be of interest to physicians who read the two reports of pharmacologic closure of patent ductus arteriosus in neonates with indomethacin1,2 to note our experience with the use of this agent in a 16-year-old girl. Since the persistent ductus contains some smooth-muscle fibers,3 may close spontaneously at any age4 and may retain the ability to constrict at least until the age of 10 months,5 we decided to try indomethacin on a 16-year-old girl with a small patent ductus arteriosus and minimal left-to-right shunt (ratio of pulmonary to systemic blood flow, 1.2:1).
