Patients’ reactions to resident work rounds were studied in a community teaching hospital. The patients generally experienced the work rounds as a positive and reassuring experience that allowed them to ask questions, often regarding diagnostic tests. Patients with a higher score for emotional disturbance tended more to regard the rounds as somewhat alarming, but no other significant relationships were found between other personal characteristics or severity of illness and the reactions to the rounds. It is recommended that incoming patients receive a short description of the purpose and functioning of work or teaching rounds.
